We’re Reopening Soon

It's time to reconnect

Reopening Soon

I want to start out by saying thank you to all of you who have ever volunteered with us, or considered volunteering by applying. As we start our third year, it's never been a better time to help us end human trafficking while serving the best coffee!
In three weeks the Freedom Cafe will be reopening and we are excited to reconnect with all of you after a long summer break

It's time to reconnect

1. Reapplication for all volunteers

In an effort to clean up our roster, and communicate that we don't expect volunteers to return each semester , we are asking all volunteers to reapply at the beginning of the fall semester. It will only take a second.

I'm Coming Back!

As always, we look forward to seeing you all back!

2. UPGRADED!

As always, we are starting the semester fresh with some great changes, repairs and upgrades to our retail space. Thank you all for complaining, and putting up with leaky pipes, overflowing buckets of sludge and many other little irritations.

The first thing you might notice is our new condiment bar equipped with a trash chute.

But wait a second, wouldn't that mess up our workflow? Well it would if we hadn't moved the...
... Register!

Now people will come straight in to order. Oh, and the card swiper is perfection!

Ever get frustrated at the placement of our cups? We've fixed that too!

The pour-over station now has both sizes! The primary kettle is now on the top to prevent those nasty burns.

And ever since we installed the new espresso machine, cup placement has been a problem. Not any more. (Unless you're really short. We have a stool for that)

other repairs

  • The espresso machine now drains into the drain, instead of a bucket!
  • The plumbing and roof leaks in have been fixed.
  • I've made a nice knock box for the portafilters (pictured)
  • The corners of the espresso station has been rounded

our new square register. More on this soon.

    4. Our New Website

I've been wanting to clean up our website for quite some time, and our new app gave me the opportunity. Before, the process of becoming a volunteer and training was hard to understand. Now it is much more clearly communicated.

    6. Where's Dan?

For the time being, I am going to be taking a back seat role in the Freedom Cafe so that I can focus on personal fundraising. As most of you know, the Freedom Cafe doesn't currently pay me for my work. It is up to me to raise my own funding. I look forward to returning soon, fully funded, to take the Freedom Cafe to the next level. Until then, feel free to share my need with anyone who might want to support the founder and manager of your favorite Freedom Cafe!

To those of you supporting and volunteering in the Freedom Café. These last few years have been incredible! I have seen the birth a movement here at UMass. I have stood along-side volunteers who are willing to give of themselves during some of the busiest years of their lives, in order to lend a helping hand to those who, without our help, have no option but to sell themselves or their children to the sex industry. Over the last few years, you have all truly inspired me to give more to see the Freedom Cafe and it's vision succeed. Thank you for believing in us. We have accomplished so much, yet we have a lot of work to do.
Exceptional things are accomplished by exceptional people.

    7. Meet Molly

I have the pleasure to introduce our first Freedom Café Intern. As I'll be stepping back this semester, Molly is going to be taking on some of my day-to-day operations. Molly came to me at the end of last semester and offered her services in order to help us expand. Shane and I realized that this is the course we are on, and are taking steps to build a Freedom Cafe Management team. Molly is our first teamate. In the last few weeks, I have also received other applications. Please bear with us as we incorporate this leadership role into our daily operations. It is vital to our growth, development and volunteer community.

    Molly Valcour

Assistant Manager | Freedom Cafe UMass

I am a entering my senior year at umass with a degree in business management with a focus in sustainability. I hope that with this internship I can help others and learn how to motivate volunteers to make a difference in the lives of people we may never meet. I also look forward to learning the ins and outs of Freedom Cafe to help it run more efficiently. I hope to see Freedom Cafe as the umass student's coffee shop of choice and increase donations to our cause.

Shane and I are looking forward to a great semester! Thank you all who have invested your time and resources in this work. We look forward to working with you who return this semester, serving you who don't and keeping connected to those of you who are Freedom Cafe Alum!

    -Dan
